Relaxing Desert City and a Few Day Stint as a Camel Jockey |
|
As much as I liked the city of Jaisalmer, the highlight was the 3 day/2 night camel safari that I did. I went with a group called Adventure Travels (www.adventurecamels.com). I highly recommend them. Unlike a lot of other outfits, they don't take you where other tourists go. So the villages you see are much more authentic. The Thar desert isn't like the Sahara in that it doesn't consist of endless dunes. Its more of a dry scub land with the occasional big dunes. I was surprised at how many farms there were. On less than 15cm of rain per year, most people make a living from agriculture raising either millet, watermelons, or cucumbers. We did get to try some of the local watermelons and cucumbers. Its interesting to see how similar but different they are. The watermelons have much less red, less sweet, but have a lot more water in them. The cucumbers are a bit sweeter. |

The Adventure Travel Agency here promises the real thing: long camelsafaris (stretching up to a month) along offbeat routes. They avoid tourist traps like the Sam and Khuri sand dunes, heading out towards Barmer instead. The experience is rustic: no tents, just sleeping on army bedding right on the dunes, under a canopy of stars. Price: Rs 850-1,050 per person per day (depending on group size).
